지난 번 알려 드린 제 신간 <미국 뒤집어보기>와 <미국 문화지도>의 출판기념 Book Reception을 8월8일(금) 오후 7시에 Foster Bank 본점 (Foster and Kedzie Ave.) 지하 Community Room에서 갖게 되었습니다. 회비는 $10입니다. 관심 있는 동문 여러분들의 많은 참석을 부탁드립니다. 일리노이주립대 교수 장석정 (법대 72졸).
동문 여러분 안녕하십니까? 일리노이주립대학의 장석정 교수(72년 법대졸)입니다. 제가 이번에 한국에서 작은 책자를 출판했는데 동문 여러분들에게 소개드리고 널리 홍보해 주시기를 부탁드리고자 합니다. <미국 뒤집어보기>와 <미국 문화지도>라는 제목의 엣세이집 두 권인데 살림출판사에서 나온 살림지식총서의 제8권과 제9권으로 출간되었습니다. 한국과 한국인들에게 많은 사물의 준거가 되고 있는 초강대국 미국을 제대로 이해하는 것은 국가적으로나 개인적으로나 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 하지만 미주 이민 100년, 한미 동맹 50년이 지난 지금도 우리 가운데에는 미국을 잘 모르고 있는 사람들이 너무나 많은 것 같습니다. 이 책들은 전문서적처럼 딱딱하고 어려운 내용이 아니라 주변에서 늘 접하는 사물들을 평범한 일반인의 시각에서 훑어봄으로서 미국을 이해하고 그 과정에서 우리 자신도 더 알아보자는 목적으로 쓴 책입니다. 각 권이 100쪽 밖에 안 되는 얇은 문고판이라 누구나 쉽게 읽을 수 있을 것 같군요. 아직도 반미감정이 높은 상황이라지만 反美든 親美든 또는 批美, 克美, 用美든 간에 知美가 선행되어야 하지 않을까요. 책의 소개/홍보를 위해서 오는 8월초 시카고에서 (Foster Bank at Kedzie) 간단한 저자 sign회를 가질 예정입니다. Dear my respectful SNU alumni. This is Hyeong-ki Kwon in the Political Science at the University of Chicago.
I would like to appreciate SNUAA alumi for your generous scholarship which I received at the end of 1999. Thanks to the scholarship, I could finish my dissertation and graduate in December 2002.
Without any exaggeration, the scholarship was very valuable fund for my field research in 1999-2000 which became one of main parts in my dissertation. My dissertation, "Fairness and Divsion of Labor in Market Society" explores how different liberal regimes and social norms like fairness are constituted in liberal market societies. Many interviews that I could conduct due to this timely fund provided my thesis with fresh and interesting data. These data have been acknowledged very precious by many scholars in political science; thus, several parts of my dissertation could be published in well-known journals, such as "Politics and Society," "Comparative Political Studies," and "German Politics and Society." Without timely fund, I could not make these achievements.
